Position Summary:
This position is responsible for the oversight of the overall maintenance of the Museum’s buildings and grounds as well as oversight of the mechanical operations of all buildings. This position will support all Museum departments as necessary to accomplish the Museum’s set objectives. This position is also responsible for driving all safety initiatives within the Museum.
Essential Functions:
Responsible for the daily maintenance of all buildings associated with the Museum, ensuring that the Museum and outbuildings are well functioning, clean, safe, and inviting to guests. Areas include, but are not limited to, electrical, lighting, plumbing, hardware, painting, phone systems, and trim.
Performs building maintenance and repair using a variety of craft skills such as carpentry, painting, and plumbing to maintain the museum’s physical facilities.
Ensure that all Museum equipment and systems have scheduled maintenance programs that are followed
Diagnose buildings, systems, and equipment failures and perform minor repairs, contracting qualified assistance when needed
Ensure that Museum grounds are kept at a satisfactory level, working with the County for service, but filling in as needed, including; lawn mowing, shrub and bed maintenance, snow and ice removal, as well as sidewalks, and parking lot during inclement weather
Responsible for the proper operation of the Museum’s security system and is the primary contact in case of emergency or system malfunction, also maintaining a current list of issued Museum keys and security codes
Maintain relationships with maintenance subcontractors and County professionals. Obtaining bids for services and making sure subcontractors provide their services as contracted
Develop and adhere to an annual maintenance and safety budget, monitor expenditures, prepare cost estimates, submit justifications for equipment, and monitor budget expenditures.
Monitor, store, and control supplies and equipment in an orderly fashion; order supplies and tools as necessary; prepare documents for equipment procurement; prepare specifications and contracts for contract services.
Utilizing the Museum’s volunteers to support the Museum maintenance activities, organize and supervise any maintenance volunteer recruits as needed
Recruit, hire, schedule, evaluate, train, and supervise part-time maintenance staff as well as Janitorial personnel
In cooperation with the curatorial and special events staff, assist in any necessary repairs to worn or damaged exhibit or event components, i.e., stage, chairs, movement of exhibit pieces or cases for events.
Assists with special projects relating to the physical facility of the museum, including directing and overseeing the annual fall fix-up during the first two weeks of September
Assembles, moves, and repairs office furniture and equipment.
Perform periodic safety inspections of the facilities and operations to ensure compliance with all safety and fire regulations, including all safety, fire, and first aid equipment and supplies, to ensure they are in proper working order
Conduct periodic training and fire/emergency drill exercises with all museum staff
Document all inspections, equipment maintenance, accidents, and employee training
Keep up to date on OSHA requirements and ensure the Museum is in compliance.
Create and keep annual/monthly/ weekly/daily MX logs
Other Responsibilities
The employee is expected to support all aspects of Museum activities and programs and will regularly assist others with their responsibilities in an effort to serve guests and assure the mission of the Museum
The employee is expected to work effectively as a team member and to maintain a satisfactory level of professionalism while performing their duties
The employee is expected to work during museum operational hours and during certain special events as needed.
Qualifications/Education:
High School diploma or equivalent experience, Three+ years’ experience in maintenance, manual repair, building, or construction. Skills and experience in carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical a must. Certifications and licenses pertaining to the position are a plus. Must be able to read and understand construction drawings, plans, and specifications. Valid NYS Driver’s License required. Knowledge of office software, including Word, Outlook, and Excel. Must be fluent in English.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb unusual heights on ladders; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles including scissor lifts and fork lifts; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, noxious odors, mechanical and electrical hazards, and all types of weather and temperature conditions.
