About the Class of 2016

Ellen Baker
A longtime Queens resident, Dr. Baker graduated from Bayside High School and
ultimately received a Doctorate of Medicine degree from Cornell University in 1978.
She joined NASA in 1981 as a medical officer and was later selected as an astronaut
in 1984. A veteran of three space flights, Dr. Baker logged more than 686 hours in
space on STS-34 in 1989, STS-50 in 1992 and STS-71 in 1995. Her 1992 mission was the
first Extended Duration orbiter flight and in her last mission she spent time aboard
the Mir Space Station. Dr. Baker retired from NASA in 2011 to pursue other
interests.

Nancy Leftenant-Colon
Born in South Carolina in 1921, Major Colon worked as a maid for a year to save
enough money for nursing school, graduating from the Lincoln School for Nurses in
the Bronx. She joined the U.S. Army as a reservist in 1944, and quickly rose to the
rank of First Lieutenant. Due to her resolve and impressive record, she ultimately
became the first black regular Army nurse in 1948. When the services split, Major
Colon became an elite Flight Nurse with the U.S. Air Force. She served as a flight
nurse throughout the Far East and was aboard the first medical evacuation flight
into the surrounded French outpost of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. An East Norwich
resident, Major Colon became the only woman to ever serve as President of the
Tuskegee Airmen. After retiring from the Air Force in 1965, she served as a nurse in
Amityville High School for many years.

Juan Trippe
Trippe was a commercial aviation pioneer, entrepreneur and the founder of Pan
American Airways, one of the iconic airlines of all time. Born in New Jersey in 1899,
he was a graduate of Yale University and he became a naval aviator during World
War I. In 1922 he formed his first airline, Long Island Airways using surplus WWI
aircraft. Pan American was founded by Trippe in 1927, and began with flights
between Key West and Havana. Continually growing through the 1930s, Pan
American became a company that changed the world. They inaugurated service
across the Pacific in 1935 and in 1939 Pan American began the first commercial
transatlantic air service from its base in Port Washington on Long Island. Pan
American later heralded the Jet Age at Idlewild Airport, which would become JFK
International Airport in 1963. Pan Am also introduced the Boeing 747, the first
widebody aircraft. A longtime East Hampton, LI resident, Trippe retired from Pan
American in 1968, while remaining Honorary Chairman until his death in 1981.

About the Long Island Air & Space Hall of Fame
Each year the Long Island Air & Space Hall of Fame will honor those
individuals who have played a major role in advancing aeronautical and technological
achievement. Your support of this new exhibit and program will assist the museum
in our efforts to educate school children throughout the region on the role that
Long Island has played and will continue to play in aerospace history.
