WORKSHOPS AND TOURS

Harnessing the Power of the Wind
Description: Engineers are constantly trying to improve the performance of these generators, allowing the turbines to transform more energy of the wind into electricity. To unlock which types of materials and designs work best, students will learn about the importance of wind power. Then, students will work in teams to act as engineers testing different turbine blades for speed and efficiency.

Grade: 6-8
Capacity: 25
Where: Brookhaven Center North Room

Scientific Computing – Monte Carlo Hyperspheres
Description: Science is all about asking interesting questions. For example, what is the volume of a four dimensional sphere? How can you calculate something you cannot even envision? This workshop will answer those questions and show how scientists use random numbers and large-scale simulations to solve very difficult mathematical problems. Using the Amazon cloud, students will write code on computers over 300 miles away from BNL, to see what happens to volume as space expands to an infinite number of dimensions.

Grade: 9-12
Capacity: 20 (only 12 seats left)
Where: Bldg. 438 Classroom

LINAC: Ready, Set, Smash
Description: During this interactive session, simulate particle collisions in Brookhaven’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) by creating a model linear accelerator using the attractive force of magnetism and the transfer of energy.

Grade: 7-12
Capacity: 24 (Only 7 seats left)
Where: Bldg. 801

Nanotechnology
Description: Scientists have discovered that materials at the nanoscale, measured in billionths of a meter, behave differently than at the macroscale. Through hands-on activities, you will learn how properties differ at the nanoscale.

Grade: 7-12
Capacity: 30 (23 seats left)
Where: Bldg. 801

Protein Structural Biology in 3D
Description: In our state of the art 3D theater, you will view protein models to explore the relationship
between protein structure and function.

Grade: 7-12
Capacity: 30
Where: Bldg. 438 Auditorium

STEAM Career Jeopardy
Description: A fast paced Jeopardy-style game. Come and guess what the career is!

Grade: 7-12
Capacity: 100
Where: TBD

Brookhaven National Laboratory Facility Tour
Description: Tour some of BNL’s State-of- the-art facilities and learn about our cutting edge science.
Grade: Undergraduate and Graduate Students Only
