Featured Activities

Design Video Games with Bloxels
Bloxels is a hands-on platform for kids to build, collaborate, and tell stories through video game creation. Designed with blocks, a universal element of childhood play, Bloxels cultivates imagination while encouraging discovery and experimentation. With Bloxels, you can realize your own video game ideas, build and animate original characters, develop villains, add in power-ups, and more - all done directly with the Bloxels Game Builder Starter Kit and then activated with the FREE Bloxels Builder App and your mobile device. Elementary Gifted/Enrichment Teacher and Bloxels ambassador, Angela Abend and Oceanside Schools Project Extra 6th grade students will be on hand to demonstrate and help you start building games!

Game of Drones - Workshop
Drones are used in so many careers such as aerial photography, mapping, and even the military. Come learn how drones can be used safely to teach students coding with Tynker, problem-solving, spatial skills, and teamwork. Todd will demonstrate and share a variety of lessons and tools to have you and your students learning and flying in no time! Led by Todd Burleson, 2016 School Librarian of the Year for School Library Journal. Tynker is a complete learning system that teaches kids to code. Kids begin experimenting with visual blocks, then progress to JavaScript and Python as they design games, build apps, and make incredible projects.

Green Screens - Workshop
Touching the Future with TouchCast. Laura Gardner, Teacher/Librarian and 2016 School Librarian of the Year Finalist for School Library Journal, will lead an interactive workshop on how to use the free TouchCast iPad app, an interactive video platform that allows teachers to easily transform their classroom into a green screen studio. Students have created curricular projects including math raps, science news shows, pubic service announcements, and more. Students can develop 21st century learning and oral presentation skills.

The Dream Flag Project
Design and display your own dream flag. The Dream Flag Project invites students to dream and hope and wish. They capture their dream poems in words and images to share with the world. The Dream Flag Project is free and open to any adult-led group of students. Students from ages 3 to 20 have created Dream Flags through schools, libraries, hospitals and other organizations. Inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes and the tradition of Nepalese Buddhist prayer flags, The Dream Flag Project® is an annual poetry/art/community-connection project for students in Kindergarten to twelfth grade.

Microsoft: Hacking STEM
People from the Microsoft Hacking STEM initiative will be at SLIME to demonstrate hands-on, teacher-tested projects and activities that use everyday materials to make STEM affordable, accessible, and fun for everyone. Demonstrating their Sensorized Glove and the Robotic Hand, they will show how to build robotic models from cardboard and straws to understand the anatomy and biomechanics of the human hand. Then, they will show how to conduct trials visualizing data in Excel to generate new ideas for improving it’s performance.

“Make a Difference” Charity Pitch
Finalists from the “Make a Difference” Charity Pitch Fest will make their pitches live at SLIME - winning pitch will have a donation made in their name to their chosen charity courtesy of the Suffolk School Library Media Association.

SLIME is brought to you by Long Island LEADS, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation.
