Dear Scouts and Scout leaders,

Achieve more through one of the Cradle of Aviation Museum’s Scout Programs!  We offer an exciting opportunity for Scout groups to use the museum’s vast resources and earn a variety of scouting accomplishments such as Badges, Awards and Belt Loops.

In addition to these programs, the museum has so much more to offer scouts. Sign up for a team building exercise in our Space Shuttle cockpit, take part in one of our competitions being held throughout the year, or schedule one of our other guided programs.


Sleep Under the Planes!

A Scout Night Out at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

Minimum of 50 people required to secure a night. One adult per four children in the group minimum. Dates are subject to availability.

“Sleep Under the Planes” includes guided activities, a Giant Screen Film, X-Ride simulator, bedtime snack, breakfast and a Cradle of Aviation Museum patch for scouts.

WOW! Wonders of Water
Earn the LOVE Water award by exploring the science of water, the water cycle, and rainbows. Discover how water is conserved by astronauts! Start to earn the SAVE Water award by building an aquifer and a rain gauge. Begin to plan how to protect water on our blue planet. (1½ hours)

SKILL BUILDING BADGES
Household Elf
Go green! Learn how to save energy and water. Play the Recycling Game. Make a craft out of recycled materials. (1½ hours)

Home Scientist
How can you find chemistry in the kitchen? Play with static electricity, create a chemical reaction, and make a slime polymer! (1½ hours)

Inventor
Discover important inventions in the history of aviation. Check out some women inventors, brainstorm your own ideas, and make your own invention! (1½ hours)

JOURNEY AWARD
Get Moving!
Earn the ENERGIZE award by exploring different forms of energy. Investigate renewable energy sources and find out how energy is conserved on Earth and in space. Start to earn the INVESTIGATE award by planning how to improve energy use. (2½ hours)

SKILL BUILDING BADGES
Entertainment Technology
What’s the science behind sound and animation? Investigate the physics of roller coasters, make a flip book, a guitar, and your own 3-D glasses! (1½ hours)

Detective
Can you solve a mystery at the museum? Analyze fingerprints, decipher secret messages, and look at clues closely under a microscope. (1½ hours)

Playing the Past
What was it like to live in the past? How have women shaped the history of aviation? Explore games, careers, and costumes from another time period. (1½ hours)

JOURNEY AWARD
Breathe (Starting 3/10/12)
Earn the AWARE award by investigating the elements in the air. Learn about air pressure and how air flows on an airplane wing. Find out if there is air in space and how the atmosphere on Earth is different than on other planets. Start to earn the ALERT award by gathering ideas on how you can clean air. (2½ hours)

SKILL BUILDING BADGES
Special Agent
Take a crack at forensic science! Test your observation skills, experiment with chromatography, and become a code breaker from World War II. (1½ hours)

Night Owl
Explore the night sky, learn about constellation legends, and make a star finder. Experiment with glow in the dark and fluorescent objects. Discover the dark world of bioluminescent creatures. (1½ hours)

Cub Scout Belt Loops
1 1/2 hour programs - $10 for scouts, $5.50 for adults.
Museum admission & materials included. Minimum of 8 scouts required.

Belt Loop Programs available:

Astronomy -- Sketch our solar system and the relative distances between planets. Use a telescope and learn about the many different objects in our universe

Science -- Work as scientists to make predictions about how different toys will work in space then talk to one of the museum's docents about how they used science in the field of aerospace.

Weather -- See how meteorologists forecast weather and how it is detected using our radar exhibit. Create a simple weather station to record rainfall, temperature and air pressure, and learn all about the water cycle to create a poster.

Cub Scout Academic Pins
1 1/2 hour programs - $10 for scouts, $5.50 for adults.
(Appropriate Belt Loop required)
Museum admission & materials included. Minimum of 8 scouts required.

Academic Pin Programs available:

Astronomy -- Spend some time in our Starlab finding the North Star and learning about constellations.   Then visit our Space Gallery and Lunar Module to learn more about human spaceflight

Science -- Build, experiment and draw all in the name of science!   This pin offers scouts a chance to experience subjects such as physics, engineering, astronomy and chemistry.  

Weather -- Using experiments and hands-on activities, find out about basic weather patterns, where weather can be found, its impacts, and the ingredients you need to conjure up some destructive forces like hurricanes and tornadoes.

Special Combination Price
Combine a Belt Loop and Academic Pin program for the reduced price of $18 for scouts, $15 for adults.

Boy Scouts Aviation Merit Badge
2 1/2hour program - $12 for scouts, $10 for adults.
Museum admission included & materials. Minimum of 8 scouts required.

Space Exploration – Build & launch your own rocket (weather permitting). Explore the museum’s space gallery. Design a moon base. See one of only three Lunar Module’s on Earth.

Aviation – Discover how planes fly. Build your own glider. Take a guided tour through the museum. Learn to read cockpit instruments. Perform a pre-flight inspection of an airplane.

Astronomy – Learn all about the stars, our moon & the planets in our Starlab. Create a star chart & identify constellations. Explore the effects of solar radiation on the Earth. Work with our optics lab to understand telescopes.

Weather – Construct your own weather station instruments. Create a meteorological map. Duplicate the effects of acid rain & other pollution. Discover how to protect our water supply by building a water filtration system.
